None of these is the winner. Most researchers now expect dreaming serves several overlapping functions, which is unsatisfying but matches the evidence better than any single story.

Why dreams are strange#

The odd logic has a physiological explanation. During REM sleep the prefrontal cortex — the region handling planning, self-monitoring and the sense that something is implausible — is much less active, while emotional and visual regions are highly active. So you get vivid imagery and strong feeling without the internal editor that would normally object to the fact that the house is also a train.

Do animals dream?#
